What are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are a safe and effective way to restore your smile. The procedure is minimally invasive, can be done in-office with your dental professional, and can be completed in two visits. Learn more about things to consider when you are thinking about getting dental veneers. Sometimes referred to as porcelain veneers, dental veneers are very thin “shells” that are custom made to cover your teeth. Veneers can change the color, shape, and spacing of your natural teeth.

 Why Veneers?

Some people are curious as to why someone might choose dental veneers. There are many reasons. Veneers can address the following issues:

  • Teeth that have gaps. Veneers can be strategically placed to close up the spaces between teeth that have been caused by receding gums or other issues.
  • Irregular shaped teeth. Teeth that have ridges, are unevenly shaped, or not lined up properly can be helped by veneers.
  • Chipped or broken teeth. Veneers can fix damaged teeth with more flexibility than crowns in some situations.
  • Tooth discoloration. Teeth that have been discolored due to trauma to the tooth, dental surgery, certain medications, or large fillings that may have become discolored can be restored with dental veneers.

How Do Dental Veneers Work?

The procedure for dental veneers is usually completed in three visits.  The first visit consists of a consultation with your cosmetic dentist where you will discuss whether you are a good candidate for veneers and details of the

procedure. Your dentist may also take an x-ray or create an impression of your teeth for veneer placement planning. The next two trips are dedicated to the placement of the veneers.

First, veneers are temporarily fitted on the tooth or teeth in order to get the placement right. After everything is adjusted, your veneers are permanently attached to your teeth.

Follow up

After you have your veneers, your dentist may want to schedule a future visit to check on how your gums are adjusting to your veneers. Your dentist will give you at-home care instructions. Just as with your natural teeth, take care not to use your teeth as “tools” or bite down on excessively hard things.  Additional at-home care consists of the same oral hygiene as your natural teeth, brushing, flossing, and using a mouth rinse.
