Whether you’re a little kid, all grown up, have perfect oral health, or have teeth that need some help — any dentist is going to take dental X-Rays of your teeth every time you’re in his/her office. After all, x-rays can help your dentist spot problems that he could never see with his naked eye.
But that doesn’t mean your dentist has to use the same ol’ film x-rays. Digital X-Rays may be the new kid on the block, but they offer all kinds of benefits that traditional film x-rays can’t:
1. Digital x-rays expose you to less radiation
You’ll still have to wear that bulky lead vest, but digital x-rays can actually reduce the amount of radiation you’re exposed to by about 80%!
2. Digital x-rays are faster
In the old days, your dentist would have to put those uncomfortable cardboard “bite wings” in your mouth, then use special chemicals to process the images. By the time those traditional film x-rays develop, your appointment might be over! Luckily, dental X-Rays have instant results. Instead of wasting time with those bite “wings”, your Los Angeles dentist will place digital sensors in your mouth that are connected to a computer. The pictures of your teeth feed right into the computer, and you and your dentist can look at them a few seconds later! That way, you’ll be able to go over them together — instead of getting a call later that everything came out OK.
3. Digital x-rays produce clearer images
In addition to being faster, digital x-rays are clearer. That way, it’s even easier for your dentist to spot tiny problems. As a result, you’re less likely to have small issues turn into big problems.
As an added benefit, digital x-rays aren’t as likely to come out over- or under-exposed, like film x-rays can.
4. Digital x-rays can be enhanced
Even with a crystal clear image, your dentist might want to take a closer look. Luckily, since they’re stored on a computer, your dentist can zoom in to specific spots and even adjust the brightness and the contrast of the picture.
5. Digital x-rays are much easier to share
When you’ve got traditional film x-rays, the only way to share them is to physically go pick them up. However, since digital x-rays are stored on a computer, they offer all of the conveniences that other computer files offer — like the ability to be emailed. That way, if you want a copy of the x-rays for yourself, or if you need to take the x-rays to a specialist, they can be sent with the click of a mouse.
Because they’re so new, not every dentist has access to digital x-rays — so if yours does, consider yourself lucky!
