Manual toothbrushes have been used since the early 1700’s. Shape, color, and bristle type have been changed throughout the years, but the purpose of the toothbrush remains the same – helping you keep your teeth and oral hygiene in good shape.
The first electric toothbrush was invented in 1954 and also has seen many changes throughout the years. It is the modern, more advanced form of a toothbrush. So which is better, a manual or electric toothbrush? There are advantages and disadvantages to both.
Manual Toothbrush:

A manual toothbrush is cost efficient. This is a toothbrush that almost everyone can afford to change every three months. For some people, electric toothbrushes are simply just too expensive.
Not only are they inexpensive, they are also easy to take anywhere. You can keep one at your office, in your bag, or even your car. This way, you can maintain your oral hygiene at work or other place where you can keep a spare toothbrush.
Manual toothbrushes also apply less pressure to your gums and teeth. Because you apply the pressure, you get to control it. With an electric toothbrush, you can be applying to much pressure to your gums or teeth and not notice it. It’s important to avoid applying to much pressure for it can cause your enamel to wear away (over time) and can cause sensitivity to your gums. Many cosmetic dentists would actually recommend a manual toothbrush!

Electric Toothbrush:
An electric toothbrush can be great for patients who have heavy tartar build-up and are prone to inflamed gums. Also, electric toothbrushes will aid those who are older and are less agile.
Electric toothbrushes come in many forms. There is one specific type of electric toothbrush that seems to stand out more than the rest, in regard to the way it cleans your teeth. Electric toothbrushes that have rotating-oscillating bristles are said to be the best. This means the bristles spin together in one position and then rotate the opposite way. This can give you a nice, effective clean and may even be better than a manual toothbrush.
Now that you know some more about manual toothbrushes and electric toothbrushes, you can decide what toothbrush works best with your case.
