Dr. Kezian is a highly educated and skilled dentist in Los Angeles that understands the importance of dental health and maintenance. The smile is the facial phenomena which attracts people and relieves stress, making us feel good and keeping the anger away. Teeth play an important role in the act of smiling as it provides a structural base for facial muscles. The mouth has three important parts:
- Teeth
- Lips
- Tongue
All these parts are essential for speaking, eating, chewing, etc. The tongue, lips and teeth help us taste food, keep food in our mouths and form words while we speak by controlling the flow of air outside the mouth.Mouth Anatomy
As you know, the mouth and teeth play an important role in maintaining our dental health! It is the entrance to the digestive tract of the body. Our mouth is lined up with various mucous membranes. These membranes are covered with the palate. The palate in the mouth is of two types:
- Hard Plate
- Soft Plate
The hard palate is bony and divides the mouth with nasal passages situated above the mouth, whereas the soft palate is fleshy and situated at the back - It contains flesh called the uvula and forms a division between the mouth and throat. On both sides of uvula you’ll find the tonsils which look likes two pillars - It holds up the opening leading to the pharynx.
The tongue is a bundle of muscles that extend from the floor of the mouth. There are tiny bumps on the upper surface of tongue known as papillae which have tiny pores that forms taste. There are four kinds of taste:
- Sweet
- Salty
- Sour
- Bitter
When food enters the mouth salivary glands which contain digestive enzyme amylase break down carbohydrates which allow the food to enter the stomach.
The lips, which help hold in the food, are covered with a slippery mucous membrane. Orbicularis oris is a muscle in the lips which help in its mobility. Its reddish color is due to the blood vessels inside and its inner portion is connected to the gums.
Types of TeethThere are four different types of teeth:
- Incisors: They are square in shape, sharp edged and are located in the front of the mouth. There are a total of eight - four on top and four at the bottom.
- Sharp Canines: They are located on either side of the Incisors.
- Premolar: Also called bicuspids. They are in a form of 2 sets - 4 premolars in each jaw.
- Molar: Molars are situated behind Premolars. They are pointed and have grooves. In total there are 12 molars - first, second and third molar. The third molars are also know as the wisdom teeth and due to the many dental problems they cause, are advised by most dentists to be removed.
The teeth in human body are made up 4 different types of tissues
- Pulp
- Dentin
- Enamel
- Cementum
Pulp is the innermost tissue that consists of nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue that nourish the teeth. The yellowish tint in teeth is due to dentin. Enamel forms the outermost layer of the crown and enables the tooth to withstand chewing pressure. It also protects teeth from Bacteria and temperature changes from food like hot food and cold food. Dentin is a hard bone like yellow substance that surrounds the pulp. Enamel covers the dentin and forms the outermost layer of the crown. Enamel withstands all types of chewing pressure and food temperature. Cementum is a bony layer outside the root under the gum that helps hold the teeth within the jawbone. Enamel and Cementum are as hard as bone!
