What causes tooth discoloration?
As we all know, the enamel or the hard outer surface of your tooth is white. As we become adults, our teeth often become naturally darker. Some of this process is due to mineral changes that occur within the enamel. However, tooth discoloration can also be caused by the foods and drinks we consume. Red wine, coffee and tea are common culprits. Some vegetables rich in carotenoids can also decrease the whiteness of your teeth! Tobacco use also will change your tooth’s color from a white to a dull yellow.
What are the different teeth whitening methods?
Most experts agree that before beginning a regimen on your own, see your dentist! You should undergo a thorough examination to ensure that there are no major problems such as undetected dental caries (cavities) or the poor condition of previous restorations.
There are some over the counter teeth whitening products available at your local drugstores. These include toothpastes, gels, mouth rinses and even chewing gum! The basic thing to understand with these types of products is that there are essentially two categories- low and high concentration home bleaching kits. The bleaching agent used in low concentration products is not as strong as the chemical agent in high concentration products. Low concentration kits typically contain strips with the bleach on them that get placed on your teeth. High concentration kits use a small mouth guard or tray that you bite to get the bleaching agent onto your teeth.
A dentist can take an impression of your mouth and create a personal mouth tray just for you. This also uses a high concentration of bleaching agent. However, the customized delivery system will whiten your teeth more evenly and efficiently. In addition, hard to whiten areas can be touched up by the cosmetic dentist with a laser bleaching tool available in the office.
Do you want fast results? If yes, you should consider in-office teeth whitening. In-office bleaching methods often use a light-cured gel with bleaching agents thinly painted over the discolored teeth. A light source such as a laser or halogen excites the agent, creating a chemical reaction that ultimately bleaches your teeth. Your gums will be protected by a rubber guard. This method is quite safe and the results are super fast!
There are additional benefits to a dental supervised bleaching regimen, whether at home or in the office. These include receiving an oral exam, which is something everyone needs twice a year anyway. Your dentist can help determine the cause of the stain and what type of product would work best to correct the discoloration. Also, your dentist should be able to provide advice on ways to protect your newly whitened teeth from discoloration again. Most teeth whitening products will last about one year before a touch up is required.
