Everybody knows that proper dental hygiene can be a boring and monotonous task but it is essential to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Remember, your oral health and overall health are connected! Dr. Kezian and his staff have some useful pointers and guidelines for you to improve your personal dental hygiene routine.

Brushing

Brushing in the morning and at night is critical for optimal oral hygiene and protecting your teeth.  Pick a good toothbrush with a small head and soft nylon bristles.  The bristles should be soft in order to reach small spaces between the teeth. Also, soft bristles are gentler on the gums. A small head makes it easier for you to reach all areas of your mouth.  Remember to replace your toothbrush every 3 months or when the bristles seem out of shape or damaged.  Toss your old toothbrush after a cold or flu-like illness to help prevent the spread of germs.

To brush properly, slightly wet your toothbrush and add about a dime-sized amount of toothpaste.  If your teeth are prone to sensitivity, select a toothpaste for sensitive teeth, preferably Sensodyne ProNamel. Hold your toothbrush at a 45 degree angle and use circular strokes.  Make sure you brush one tooth at a time for a few seconds each and don’t forget to brush over the gum line.  Finally, don’t forget your tongue and inside surfaces of your cheeks for good dental hygiene.

Flossing

Next up, flossing! American Dental Association recommends flossing at least once a day.  You may need to try different kinds of floss until you find a type that feels right for you when it comes to thickness and flavor.  Flossing is an essential part of your dental homecare because it can clean the dental plaque your toothbrush leaves behind as it can’t get in between your teeth like floss can. For some cases, Dr Kezian will also recommend using a proxy brush which is very helpful.

Rinsing

After you have finished brushing and flossing, you should add mouthwash to your routine.  This also helps limits plaque build-up and contributes to good dental hygiene.  Once you have selected a mouthwash, take a small sip, swish and spit! It’s that easy.

Dr. Kezian and his staff hope these guidelines help you improve your oral health and your beautiful smile. If you have specific questions or needs, we would be happy to help with recommendations.
