We are all well aware of the fact that good oral hygiene is extremely important for us. In our extremely busy routines, human beings at times forget to consider dental care amongst others like hair care, body care, nail care etc. But on giving it a deeper thought we realize how much do we know about oral health apart from the basic brushing and flossing of our teeth. As a dentist, Dr Kezian understands how important knowledge is, especially for the common man. When it comes to taking care of your teeth, you must be well aware of certain important things that will help you maintain a healthy mouth. To help maximise your oral health knowledge, we’ve listed a few basics. Read on and follow, for a start towards hygiene.
Beginning from the Basics
You do understand the importance of brushing and flossing your teeth, what you tend to ignore is the purpose of the routine. At any given point of time during the day, living inside your mouth are approximately 10-15 billion bacteria. These are divided into almost 600 identifiable types. Once accumulated, these bacteria form a sticky bio-film called plaque. These vindictive microbes may cause serious oral health problems which include tooth decay and gum diseases.
Suggested by Dr. Kezian, one must take various measures to limit the damage caused by these bacteria.
Proper Brushing and Flossing of Teeth: You should adhere to proper brushing techniques and one should brush twice a day on a daily basis. It helps to remove the stuck food particles from your teeth along with the disease causing bacteria. Likewise flossing also requires a particular technique or it may damage the gum lining.
Using Fluoride Products: Products such as toothpaste and mouthwash containing fluoride are highly recommended by dentists!
Using Fluoridated Water: It is highly recommended for kids under the age of 12. Fluoridated water helps you to maintain your dental health by immunizing your teeth and gums.
Proper Balanced Diet: Having a proper balanced diet is very important as it helps you to maintain the overall health of your body including the dental health. Thus, green vegetables, fresh fruits and milk products should be included in your daily diet.
Maintaining Good Oral Hygiene
Maintaining good oral hygiene is the most useful thing one can do for their dental health.
White and healthy teeth make you look good and feel more confident about yourself. After all, beautiful teeth make up a beautiful smile.
Even with a very sedulous hygiene routine, certain traces of plaque or food particles may remain in the hard to reach places between your teeth. If these are not removed within 48 hours then the plaque hardens to form an insoluble substance that cannot be removed even by proper brushing and flossing. Thus, dental care is a big aspect for one to have a healthy mouth and be overall healthy.
Proper brushing and flossing is the key to the daily preventive care. Prevention surely is much better than the painful and expensive cure.
Scheduling/planning your visits to the dentist: People don’t usually visit a dentist until their actually is a problem which is obviously wrong. You should plan to visit your dentist at least once in every six months, as recommended by the American Dental Association. Dr. Kezian and staff will guide you further on the importance of regular dentist visits.
You should make use of an ADA approved mouthwash after every meal you take.
All these measures can be taken to maintain good oral hygiene and live a healthy and disease free life.
